I am having great fun leading a 2-day project management training with a state agency. The mornings focus on tools and organization-specific exercises. The afternoons are focused on participant’s “real” projects and receiving feedback from peers on their project work.
One concept that really resonates with the group is stakeholder analysis. Below are a couple of tools that can help you identify stakeholders and how you need to engage with them before, during and at the conclusion of your projects The three main steps (along with a an associated project management tool) are:
1) Identify your stakeholders (documented within project charter).
2) Determine what level of interaction you need with stakeholders at various points during the project (stakeholder matrix). This will form the foundation of your communication plan with stakeholder groups.

3) Determine each stakeholder group’s initial perspective about the project (stakeholder continuum). Where are they today? Where do you need them to be?
