Plants don’t do well at my house. I don’t have a green thumb, or even a brown thumb. Once I even managed to kill an aloe plant. I tend to just water, water, water regardless of what kind of plant it is. I don’t know how to read the signs of what each individual plant needs. The same thing can happen at work with employees. I would never blame the “stupid plant” for its inability to grow in my home environment. But at work, we tend to blame the employee rather than consider the environment and the individualized care each staff member needs.
Stupid plant……the leaves are falling off
Stupid plant……it’s shriveling up
Stupid plant……it’s drowning
Stupid employees…….they keep quitting
Stupid employees……they aren’t engaged
Stupid employees…….they need to get more work done
Sounds a little silly doesn’t it?
Wouldn’t it make more sense to ask,
“Is this environment right for this employee?”
“What do I need to do differently?”
“How can I help this employee flourish?”
